If you do not know, no problem. Let us look into some of the basic gym terminologies here. A gym terminology is nothing but a word or a phrase that refers to an act or fitness-related concept. A person who desires to become fit must know these terminologies and must update his fitness-related knowledge regularly. A person who starts his fitness journey without having any fitness knowledge could mislead his goals.
Some of the general Gym Terminologies:
- Superset:
This is a term used concerning workouts. This is a category in types of workout sets. A superset is the best way to damage and maximize our muscle growth. A superset is a kind of set in which two exercises are performed back to back with little or no rest between them. This is typically done with opposing muscle groups. But, this could also be done for one muscle group too.
- Amrap:
Amrap is a general term that has a simple meaning that is doing "As Many Reps As Possible" for a given workout. This term is the acronym of the mentioned phrase.
- HIIT:
HIIT is the acronym of High-Intensity Interval Training. This is another kind of workout style that has a unique procedure. This workout includes short and high-intensity exercises that are performed back to back without rest. The rest period is the key thing that maximizes the result in this workout.
- Tabata:
The term 'Tabata' can be described as a part of the HIIT workout. Tabata refers to the HIIT workout consisting of right rounds of twenty seconds of high-intensity workout followed by ten seconds of low-intensity rest.
- DOMS:
DOMS is the acronym for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. This term refers to the muscle soreness that you feel after performing a new exercise or activity. Muscle soreness is completely different from muscle pain and injury. Muscle soreness paces the way to rebuild the muscle that is damaged during a workout.
- Anabolic:
Anabolic is a term that refers to the state of getting bigger. The process of 'building up' from chemical reactions that synthesize molecules in metabolism. This process helps in developing our fitness and could be a motivation.
- Compound:
The compound is a term that includes more than one. A compound exercise is an exercise that involves more than one joint and muscle group. Simply, two or more muscle groups are activated by performing one exercise.
- Isolation:
Isolation refers to the focus and target given to one particular muscle group. A single workout is performed targeting only one muscle group with much focus and concentration.
- EMOM:
EMOM is the acronym of 'Every Minute On the Minute'. It is just a simple term that means performing a given number of reps 'Every Minute On the Minute'.
- Negatives:
Negatives could be described as a kind of workout. This is the act of focusing on the eccentric or the lengthening part of a muscle contraction. If a beginner feels tough to perform a workout he can perform negatives to make progress. Eg. : The downward part of a bicep curl.
- Posterior Chain:
Posterior Chain is a term that involves some major muscle groups of our body. The combination of lower back, glutes, hamstrings, and calf muscles working together as a whole is referred to as Posterior Chain.
- Progressive Overload:
Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress put on the muscle in performing an exercise. Progressive overload is a key thing in muscle growth. Progressive overload can be done by the increase of volume/intensity/reps.
